Story
The song was inspired by a story Chou heard at a teahouse — about a young woman from the countryside who came to Taipei in search of a better life. Yet her dreams and love were both shattered by reality. Like a flower beaten down by rain, her youth and hope faded too soon.
History
Throughout its history, Taiwan was once ruled by the Dutch, the Spanish, and later by Japan. Flower in a Rainy night (雨夜花) was born during the Japanese colonial period in 1934, composed by Teng Yu-hsien (鄧雨賢) with lyrics by Chou Tien-wang (周添旺), and first performed by the singer Sun-sun (Liu Ching-hsiang, 劉清香).
During the postwar and martial law periods, the song was banned for its mournful tone and its melody’s link to a Japanese military song. Still, people sang it in private, and it eventually became a timeless classic of Taiwanese folk music.
Modern Revival
In 2021, the Netflix series Light the Night, set in Taipei’s nightlife scene of the 1980s, reintroduced Rainy Night Flower as part of its soundtrack.
Beyond film, the song is also played on EVA Air flights during landing, becoming a familiar melody that symbolizes homecoming and belonging.
